"ODE TO BOBBY RAY POWLEDGE"
FEBRUARY 19, 1930 - MARCH 4, 1999

Bobby Ray Powledge Bobby Ray Powledge was a great athlete. Raised in Houston's east end, he attended Stephen F. Austin High School. In 1948 he was chosen on the All City baseball team, leading all hitters with a .474 batting average while playing center field as few ever have or ever will.

After high school he played baseball for Baylor University and signed a professional contract with the Houston Buffs of the St. Louis cardinal organization in August of 1949. He played as high as AAA until a collision with another outfielder ended his career in 1953. In 1986 he began playing in the Harris County Senior Softball League where he became an immediate standout.

Bobby Ray was also an avid fisherman, but more importantly, Bobby Ray was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great friend to all who met him. He could be counted on to help with any worth- while project. The enthusiasm of "B.R." brightened any scene he entered and he loved to laugh, even at himself. Harris County Senior Softball will miss his presence.

Those of us who continue to play the game without him know that it will never be quite the same again. We are richer because Bobby Ray Powledge, a true winner, passed our way.

"In Bobby Ray's memory, bleacher fees will not be collected in 1999."
